To engage residents in
planning the future of their communities, an outreach team of residents funded
by the Jacobs Center conducted a thorough door-to-door survey of over
600 residents and 200 businesses to find out what services and amenities community
members wanted and needed.
The survey team reflected the racial and ethnic composition of the area. The survey was conducted in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese in homes, churches, schools, and activity centers within a one-mile radius of the corner of Euclid Avenue and Market Street. In the survey, the Outreach Team asked: Where do you shop? What neighborhood programs and services do you use? Where do you turn for help? What do you do for entertainment and recreation? What type of new businesses do you want in the area? What type of new employment is needed in the area? The findings? Most revealing was the surprise many residents expressed at even being asked what they wanted. Many also voiced their skepticism that anything would ever be done. Too many promises had been made in the past. Yet, most respondents expressed support and renewed hope: This project will give the community a sense of value, said one. Added another, "A commercial development in the area will make it safer and enhance multi-cultural unity." Latest Accomplishment Neighborhood Coordinator Program |
